The Benton Forest Coalition

The Benton Forest Coalition is a loosely organized group of volunteers interested in conserving the native and old growth forests on public lands in the Oregon Coast Range. We work in concert with Oregon Wild, Cascadia Wildlands, and the Coast Range Association.

Since the cancellation of the WOPR, our interest has shifted to working with the Salem office of the BLM to establish hiking trails in the Alsea Valley.

We have proposals before the BLM for trails in seven different areas.

Two hiking trails routes have been flagged – Coleman Creek (near Alsea Falls), and Van Horn Road (3.5 miles south of Alsea).

The proposed trail routes have not been developed but are available for exploration. Be prepared for rough terrain and inclement weather. Be sure to carry a compass, map, and warm clothing. For directions to either trail route, email unclereedy@hotmail.com or giant.trees@yahoo.com, with the word “hike” in the description.

NEW HIKING TRAILS?

The Benton Forest Coalition has several proposals before the Bureau of Land Management for hiking trails through old growth forests near Alsea Falls, and near the town of Alsea on Highway 34 to the Oregon Coast. These trails travel through towering stands of old growth firs, cedars, hemlocks, and yews, with many trees over eight feet in diameter.
